The WinRock Database

The WinRock Database is a petrographic database of over 300 igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks. Each rocktype contains a petrographic summary consisting of Rock Name, Group, Family, Texture, Structure, Composition, Occurrence and Comments. The descriptions have been standardized using standard petrographic terms. Searches can be done on individual or multiple fields using partial or complete key words. The composition field can be searched with up to three minerals simultaneously.

  • Petrographic descriptions of over 300 igneous, metamorphic and sedimentary rocks
  • View, add and delete images, sample image set included
  • Scrollable list of rock names
  • Search each field simultaneously using keywords
  • ID/Bookmark
  • Printing and clipboard support
  • Link to advanced details on Wikipedia

A typical record looks like:

  • Rock Name: Lamproite
  • Group: Igneous
  • Family: Lamproites
  • Texture: Inequigranular, porphyritic
  • Structure: Massive
  • Composition: Phlogopite, diopside (clinopyroxene), richterite, enstatite (orthopyroxene), sanidine (K feldspar), leucite, glass, serpentine (sec), xenocrysts
  • Occurrence: Hypabyssal, volcanic
  • Comments: A general term for highly potassic mafic to ultramafic rocks occurring as small extrusions, dykes and pipes
